Getting Around KI

KI Holiday Location

Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is approximately 4,405 km square (1,701 sq square miles) in area; roughly seven times the size of Singapore!

Once you’re on the island it is important to note that there is no public transport or taxis, and definitely no uber! This means you will need to hire a car or bring one over with you on the ferry. When hiring a car, it is important to consider a few things. Some hire companies on the mainland do not allow their rental cars to catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island. Additionally, you will need to check insurance rules for driving hire cars on the Island. There may be restrictions on driving on Kangaroo Island’s unsealed roads. There may also be rules on driving at dusk and dawn when wildlife is active.

Kingscote: Kingscote is biggest town on the island, about an hours drive from Penneshaw. The only airport on Kangaroo Island is also at Kingscote.

Penneshaw: Penneshaw is at the east of the island, where the ferries arrive.

How long does it take to drive across Kangaroo Island?

Allow for at least 2 hours driving east to west (Penneshaw to Flinders Chase) if you choose to not stop. But with so many things to see, plan to double or even triple that time. The eastern half of the island is where the port and the major towns are located.

The western half is more wild and natural. In reality, if possible, allow a few days and really enjoy the delights Kangaroo Island has to offer.
