Getting Around KI

Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is approximately 4,405 km square (1,701 sq square miles) in area; roughly seven times the size of Singapore!

Once you’re on the island it is important to note that there is no public transport or taxis, and definitely no uber! This means you will need to hire a car or bring one over with you on the ferry. When hiring a car, it is important to consider a few things. Some hire companies on the mainland do not allow their rental cars to catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island. Additionally, you will need to check insurance rules for driving hire cars on the Island. There may be restrictions on driving on Kangaroo Island’s unsealed roads. There may also be rules on driving at dusk and dawn when wildlife is active.

If hiring a car while on the island, you will need to book well in advance, especially during peak periods. Cars cannot be booked on arrival to the Island. There are two hiring companies operating on the island, Hertz and Budget Rent-A-Car.

Kingscote Airport is located 14 kilometres from the main town of Kingscote. Other larger towns of Penneshaw (51km) and American River (29km) are also not far. There are no taxis or public transport options at the Kingscote Airport but it is possible to hire a car from one of the onsite agents. Passengers can also arrange for private transfer through a tour company or through their hotel or resort. Other facilities at the small airport include a coffee machine, a confectionery machine, toilets and telephones.

There are four main towns on Kangaroo Island:

Kingscote: Kingscote is biggest town on the island, about an hours drive from Penneshaw. The only airport on Kangaroo Island is also at Kingscote.

Penneshaw: Penneshaw is at the east of the island, where the ferries arrive.

Parndana: Parndana in the centre of the island and serving the farming community.

American River: American River is a small community that is actually on a bay not a river, between Kingscote and Penneshaw.

Can I drive on Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island’s stunning beauty may best be enjoyed by self-driving, which is one of the finest methods to see it all. Alternatively, you can rent a car when you arrive on Kangaroo Island.

If are looking for some adventure, then go on a 4×4 tour around the whole island. The most popular tourist destination on Kangaroo Island is Seal Bay Conservation Park where visitors can swim with seals and penguins!

Can I travel without a vehicle on Kangaroo Island?

Ferry passengers that are travelling to Kangaroo Island without a vehicle can make use of Kangaroo Island’s Sealink shuttle service. Shuttles run from Adelaide and Goolwa to Cape Jervis and from Penneshaw to Kingscote and American River.

Luggage vans will transport your luggage to and from the ferry and keep it safe throughout the voyage if you don’t have a car.

How long does it take to drive across Kangaroo Island?

Allow for at least 2 hours driving east to west (Penneshaw to Flinders Chase) if you choose to not stop. But with so many things to see, plan to double or even triple that time. The eastern half of the island is where the port and the major towns are located.

The western half is more wild and natural. In reality, if possible, allow a few days and really enjoy the delights Kangaroo Island has to offer.
