Travelling to and from KI

Access to the island is by charter plane from Adelaide or ferry from Cape Jervis on the mainland.

Kangaroo Island is a comfortable 45 minute ferry trip from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, or a short 30 minute flight from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport.

The island is popular, so pre-booking all services like touring, accommodation and car hire before arriving on the island is highly recommended.

Kangaroo Island SeaLink

You can get to Kangaroo Island on the Sealink ferry with your car or as a passenger from Cape Jervis direct into Penneshaw

Sealink operate two large vehicle and passenger ferries with multiple departures daily, with up to 12 return services per day during peak times.

Enjoy a leisurely 1.5-hour drive from Adelaide to Cape Jervis through the Fleurieu Peninsula, along South Road. We recommend that you arrive at the Ferry Terminal at least half an hour prior to departure, so please allow approximately two hours or more to arrive and check in.

Treat yourself to a coffee and snacks from the fully licenced café onboard the ferry while crossing and taking in the beautiful views. The ferries also have free wifi, to stay connected. The 45 minute ferry crossing will feel like it flew by and you’ll be on Kangaroo Island before you know it!

Ferry passengers that are travelling to Kangaroo Island without a vehicle can make use of Kangaroo Island’s Sealink shuttle service. Shuttles run from Adelaide and Goolwa to Cape Jervis and from Penneshaw to Kingscote and American River.

Luggage vans will transport your luggage to and from the ferry and keep it safe throughout the voyage if you don’t have a car

SeaLink also provide car parking at Cape Jervis should you require.

If hiring a car while on the island, you will need to book well in advance, especially during peak periods. Cars cannot be booked on arrival to the Island. There are two hiring companies operating on the island, Hertz and Budget Rent-A-Car.
